The portrayed scene is the sequel of a legendary episode in ancient Rome’s history. In order to ensure Rome's expansion, Romulus, its founder, and his fellow Romans, men of its first generation, abducted their wives to be from their neighboring Sabine families, despite the Sabines’ aversion of their women marrying the Romans. A few years after the abduction, the Sabine men planned to fight back against the Romans and rescue the seized women. The Sabine women, now wives and mothers of Romans, intervene at the gates of Rome, putting themselves and their children in the way of the two clashing sides. The central figure of the painting is Hersilia, together with her her babies, that pushes herself between her father on the left, leader of the Sabines, and her husband on the right, Romulus, in a attempt to enforce peace and compassion.
