The Italian narrative poem describes the life after death as seen by Dante through his fantastical and visionary journeys across Hell, Purgatory and Heaven. In Inferno/Hell, he is guided by the ancient Roman poet Virgile, both shown in the far-left background. As they go through Hell’s eighth circle, the realm of counterfeiters and falsifiers, they witness an eternal confrontation between two condemned souls, one being Dante’s former friend. Bouguereau powerfully captures their clash, as their struggle is embodied with every muscle and tendon.
